Medical Tourism
Medical Tourism (also referred to as Health Tourism and Global Health Care) is a concept that describes the movement of people out of their home country to obtain medical care and surgical procedures usually at a lower cost and more quickly. The factors which led to the increasing popularity of this concept revolve around the long waiting times at public hospitals, the difficulty of paying health insurance, the high prices of health care in the home country and seeking lower prices or highly skilled surgical teams, clinics and hospitals with technology.

Clinical Issues
All surgeries have risks, these risks come from many factors, including what tipe of surgery is going to be done, if the patient has health problems not related to the surgery, if the patient is a smoker, if the patient is obese, if the incident was an emergency (ex: appendicitis, ulcer perforation etc) or emergent (poli-traumatic patient, run over victim).
The risk cannot be totally banned, but with medical progress and the introduction of new medication, new equipment, new anaesthetic technics, better medical studies and urgent standard qualities demanded, the anaesthetic procedure has become safer.
The anaesthetist prevents, treats and compensates any medical problem that may appear during or after the surgery. Before the surgery the patient is valuated by the anaesthetist (pre-anaesthetic consultation or pre-anaesthetic valuation). This valuation gives the anaesthetist a certain knowledge of the patients health so that he can prevent certain problems that may occur.
We may say that the most common problems that do occur are not dangerous, such as itching, nausea, vomiting, the serious problems are very rare, such as serious allergic reaction, genetic situations that are unknown, etc.
The accidentes or complications are very rare and for safety measures the hospitals are very well equipped and have an ICU Unit (Intensive Care Unit), which reduce drastically risks involving serious accidentes.
It is related with what type of anaesthetic, surgery and clinical conditions of the patient.
With the arrival of modern technics and medication, the patient is woken from the anaesthetic calmly and gradually without discomfort. The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and pain. In the mean while the anaesthetist administers medication before the patient wakes up to prevent these situations.
After surgery the patient stays in a recovery room for an observation period, so that the anaesthetist can observe the response of the patient to the anaesthetic, during this period the anaesthetist will verify the breathing function, circulation and conscious level, being able to treat any symptom that might appear.
It is a medical consultation similar to any medical consultation that the patient has had with the surgeon, important aspects will be seen by the anaesthetist. In this consultation the anaesthetist will ask the patient if he has any medical problems, such as Heart disease, lung or kidney disease etc., if the patient has any history of prior problems with anaesthetic or any close family with this type of problem, if the patient has any allergies, if he takes any medication that might interfere with the anaesthetic or that he might have to suspend and if he is a drug abuser. It will be in this consultation that the anaesthetist will inform the patient about the type of care he will need before and after the surgery, the information that is given will also be about the fast of pre-surgery, the rotines and information about the type of anaesthetic that will be administered, the anaesthetist will also clear up any doubts and fears that the patient might have.
Most of the time this consultation is substituted by a pre valuation of the patient before the surgery, duss avoiding more charges.
In this pre valuation important elements are taken into account to assure a safe anaesthetic.
No, there is no test to know if the patient is allergic to the anaesthetic, Nowadays this type o complication is very rare and any hospital is prepared to treat this problem if it does occur.
It is not required to do so, but if you want you can help in this way, the correspondence and communication between the doctor and the doctor who will treat.
Your travel plans are always conditioned by your recovery. However, when you make the budget we give you the information how much time you need to stay in the Algarve.
Any surgical procedure has its risks. Regardless of the quality of the facilities, the surgeon's expertise or competence of the whole team, some things can go wrong, mistakes are attributable to the surgical team, facilities or even the constitution of the patient. Before surgery, the patient must sign a document which is called Informed Consent, which assumes knowledge of the risks of intervention, the patient responds, also, to an inquiry, a query is evaluated, the patient havs an admission and a specialty consultation in this way we seek to minimize the error rate.
After surgery and if something is running out of normal, the patient should contact the surgeon to schedule an appointment for evaluation.
If you need to do more than one surgical procedure contact us so we can evaluate the possibility of achieving them in the same intervention.
Every surgical procedure has a minimum stay recommended in the Algarve. However feel free to enjoy every corner of this region and extend your holidays.
